To start a claim, you must first give the other party notice by sending them a Claims Letter.  If your claim is under £10,000, you must give seven days’ notice.  If your claim is between £10,000 and £30,000, you must give fourteen days’ notice.  Template letters are available below.

After the seven  or fourteen days, you can proceed by completing two copies of a Claim Summary and two copies of a Summons.  Both forms and guidance notes are available below.

You must purchase the correct amount of Treasury stamps from the cashiers at Customer and Local Services.  The amount depends on the amount of your claim.  Please see the table on the last page of the General Information booklet below.

If you need to purchase treasury stamps while the Treasury is closed, email with your request and you will be given further instructions.

You can then submit your completed forms along with a copy of your Claims Letter, your receipt for Treasury stamps, and a stamped envelope addressed to the Defendant(s) to the Petty Debts Court in person or by post.

You will be given a date and time to attend a Hearing for your claim.
