Moving Checklist

11.1.30.L9 Updated on:

If you carefully plan and organise your move, it is likely to be less stressful. Use this moving checklist to guide you through the time leading up to your moving day.

At least a month before the move

  1. Confirm the date of your move
  2. If you’re renting, tell your landlord of your moving out date (check your notice period)
  3. Check your home and contents insurance to make sure you have cover from the day you move to your new home
  4. Get quotes from removal firms. Check the limit of their insurance if you have very expensive items.
  5. Book extra storage if required
  6. Notify the relevant utility companies of the date you are going to leave and the new property you are moving to so connections or readings can be taken.
  7. Start getting rid of possessions you no longer need.  Decide which items can be taken to a charity shop or recycling
  8. If you need new furniture or carpets, order them now and arrange delivery for when you move in

At least two weeks before moving

  1. Start packing non-essential items such as books and non-seasonal clothes into boxes
  2. Arrange for your post to be forwarded
  3. If you have children or pets, if possible, arrange for someone to look after them during the move
  4. Check arrangements with your removal company. Make sure you both agree on arrival times and your removers have directions to your new address
  5. Arrange a time to collect the keys for your new home from the estate agent or landlord
  6. Notify your bank of any changes to direct debits and standing orders
